Chapter Twelve

Suitcases are packed, ready to leave while a last-minute run-around is done in the hopes that nothing is forgotten.

“Come on!” shouts the impatient booming voice coming from the front door.

“I’m just checking everything bitch, back off! You want another fire?” Simon calls back to him.

“Well it won’t fucking matter if we miss our flight.”

“Oh shut it, misery guts. Okay, let’s go. Oaxaca Mexico, here we come!” Simon declares as he swans past Julien through the open door.

Julien shakes his head in mild annoyance but knows there’s no point in arguing with the queen. He picks up both suitcases along with his own carry-on luggage then closes the door of their apartment behind him, relieved that they are finally having a break after the recent shit storm of disaster that crossed their path.

“You know I always have the window seat when we travel,” Simon states.

“Which is exactly why I want it now; you never give it up. Any time we’ve ever travelled. Ever,” Julien debates his point.

“You know I get pukey if I can’t see the horizon. Don’t fucking blame me if I miss the bag and throw up on you.” Simon purses his lips and shifts his gaze elsewhere.

Julien takes a step backward in the aisle to allow Simon to enter the bank of seats to take the window position.

“After you, princess,” Julien says and waves his partner into the window seat he was hoping for. Such are the compromises of a happy life.

Simon takes full advantage of the window seat in the main cabin where he wedges himself in tightly, fluffs a pillow and places it between his head and the port hole window. Seat belt on and tightened, he then pops his earbuds in and begins selecting his viewing entertainment for the next five or so hours before promptly falling asleep—even before the plane has taken off.

Julien chuckles to himself quietly and relishes at the prospect of relative peace and quiet for a decent period of time during the flight. Maybe he, too, will sleep a little; it is after all early morning for him. Then again, maybe he’ll just eat a trashy airline breakfast and start drinking when the airline says he’s allowed. He is after all on holiday and is going to milk the old adage of it being midday somewhere in the world.

At a cruising altitude of 35,000 feet the seat belt sign has been switched off. There is a flurry of action between the stewards and the jostling of trollies in the galley is as well orchestrated as bamboo steamer basket laden trollies at a busy Sunday morning Yum Cha service. Julien unbuckles and makes as though he’s heading to the bathroom but sidesteps and tries to find the campest looking steward he can.

“Hey, gorgeous,” Julien says in his best ‘gay voice.’ “Any chance of getting a couple of mimosas, minus the juice?”

Mr. Gorgeous Gay raises his eyebrow at Julien. “You and everyone else on the flight, sunshine.”

“Sorry, thought I would just save you the extra trip, being in hospo, I know what it’s like,” Julien tries to justify.
